Bay State Gymnastics Academy vaults to victory
Teamwork brought Dartmouth's Bay State Gymnastics Academy to the top at a weekend competition.
On Sunday, April 10, all 43 of the athletes from Bay State competed in the Power Team Gym Seaside Invitational meet hosted at Bay State Gym. Teams from as far as New Jersey and Pennsylvania participated in the event, with 130 athletes from ages 6 to 31 competing.
The athletes were organized into groups of six to 14 and performed routines on the mats. In events like tumbling passes and vaulting, each athlete performs one right after the other and then are judged as a group.
Out of four pools, Bay State came away with first place wins overall in the level 4 and level 6 pools. Level four came away with a score of 17.4417 and level 6 came away with a score of 17.2583.
Bay State has been preparing its routines for the event since October, said Bay State Team Gym Head Coach Rachel Hallett. She was happy with their performance, as were the athletes.
Winning "pushes them to keep up their hard work,” Hallett said.
The competition was just the beginning for Bay State, which will be taking 34 athletes to the 2016 USA All National Championships in Tennessee later this year.
“All of our coaches are proud of [the athletes] all around,” Hallett said. “They’ve been doing great all season and we’re really excited to see how well they’ll do at Nationals."
